Concept:

Retro-Acid is Kozzmozz' second oldest concept and celebrates the infamous Roland TB-303 bass machine. Thé party for the fans of the 303 and it’s unmistakable Acid sound, the machine that formed and shaped electronic music and keeps influencing it. It surely did so in the early days when we loved to dance to it ! And the current Acid revival proves that we still do today !

It also means the Retro Acid parties are still very alive and kicking and again we have invited some international guests that have been active in electronic music for a very long time and know the acid sounds of the beginning like no others …

Our resident Spacid has played a lot of major clubs in Belgium and abroad ( Weekend Club – Berlin, The Key and Trash – Uk , Paradiso and Melkweg – Nl , … ) but he’s still at his best at home !

Tyree Cooper is one of the originators of Acid House, pioneering the sound back in the 80´ies from Chicago through various hits on the underground label DJ International. More recently one of his big hits ‘Turn up the Bass’ was re-released on Epic and his own label Supa Dupa Recordings with remixes.

Ben Sims is known for his trademark funky/ tribal Techno but Acid is one of his favorite styles and he even puts on Acid parties in London himself sometimes. He’s looking forward to playing a real acid set on Retro Acid.

And who knows, maybe we will be treated to something special between Tyree Cooper and Ben Sims on stage as they have been known to do in the past with Tyree MC’ ing over Bens records …

Next to this extravaganza, we also bring you Belgian topper X&Trick, the leading force behind the Bug Klinik label and parties next to numerous others events. Bugklinik recently expanded with a web-label and booking-agency and X-trick is also working on new projects such as Endiku. He’s currently also playing all the biggest and best experimental festivals in Europe.

JRD, based in Antwerp, originally from Holland, got interested in dance music when New-beat and Acid-house was introduced. Since than he has been playing records and experiencing the evolution of electronic dance music. He’s the founder of the Dutch Resistance-concept in Antwerp and one of the resident powers at Technoir and Metrotechno. This night he will go back to the start, 20 years ago, 1988, Acieeeeed !

Acid in the house !!!!!!

Artists:

Ben Sims (Killabite, London)

Known as the '3 deck master', 'the human ableton' and 'the machine', Ben
Sims had his first decks at age ten. Schooled on mix tapes by the likes of Bambaata, DJ Cheese and Froggy, and with his musical roots in reggae, funk, disco, electro,
rare groove and hip-hop, by his mid teens he was spinning at after-hours 'blues' houses and a few years later came the acid house explosion with pirate radio and clubs.

Skip forward over 15 years and you’ll find he’s one of the UK’s biggest techno exports and a much in demand producer. Ben has been involved in running 9 labels, a couple of which are on hold at present (Theory, Killabite, Hardgroove, Native, Ingoma, Symbolism, Assembly,KB Records inc, Split Music), each one with a distinctive sound, ranging from hardgroovin’ and funk driven techno and house that is the trademark of his DJ sets, via tribal, to melodic electronica.

In a genre that propagates sound-a-likes, Ben Sims productions have gained widespread attention and feature regularly in the boxes of his own personal heroes like Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Jeff Mills and Rolando, whilst also attracting crossover appeal from the likes of Carl Cox etc. He has remixed Jeff Mills, Green Velvet, Blake Baxter, DJ Funk, Marco Bailey, Chris Liebing, Adam Beyer plus many more and has had his tracks and remixes featured on mix cds by Robert Hood, Francois Kevorkian, DJ Rush, Joey Beltram, Dave Clarke, Umek, Luke Slater, Sven Vath, Richie Hawtin and hundreds more.

The past 10 years have seen Ben constantly touring and tearing up dancefloors at legendary clubs & parties like- Liquid room, Tokyo, Sonar, Barcelona, Limelight. NYC, Rex, Paris, Zouk, Singapore, I love Techno, Gent, Tresor, Berlin, Awakenings, Amsterdam and Atomic Jam, Birmingham plus hundreds of others with his tight, energetic and skilful brand of 3 deck wizardry. Add this to the 6 deck ROKU sets with Mark Broom, recent ventures into promoting with both the Retro_vert and Split parties causing a storm in London, a monthly internet radio show presented with Alex Downey and a new mix cd lined up for the Slovenian based Matrix series, plus the FREQUENCY 7 dex´n´ fx and laptop shows with Birmingham's Surgeon, pushing the boundaries of DJ sets or as part of the ESSEX RASCALS with Tony Anderson, Mark Broom and Paul Mac dropping everything from House to Funk to Disco. The illusive classics remixing duo KILLA PRODUCTIONS again with Paul Mac – also a former guest at Retro Acid - plans for a disco re-edit project and after recent bizarre but genius use of the hit 'Remanipulated' in a hardcore lesbian porn clip doing the rounds on the net, you can certainly expect some sexy new beats from Mr Sims very soon!

Tyree Cooper (DJ International, Chicago)

It probably all began with the old R&B dusties of his mother that Tyree Cooper was impassionedly listening to. Growing up on the streets of Chicago’s South Side, Tyree Cooper discovered his love for the soul music of the 60’s. A first step was to join his Grammar school band at the age of 13 – playing the flute! His other passion at that time was playing basketball. Both passions followed him to the high school where he met Mike Dunn and learned how to DJ. Listening to Farley “Jackmaster” Funk, The Hot Mix 5, Ron Hardy and the electrifying energies of Frankie Knuckles, Tyree was well schooled at an early age.

Eventually Tyree’s basketball skills awarded him at scholarship to the University of Wisconsin-Stout where the bourgeoning mixing skills were fine-tuned. Two years after college Tyree was already one of the most popular and highly sought -after DJs in Chicago. Then Vince Lawrence, of the garage funk band Jesse’s Gang ( founded by Jesse Saunders) persuaded Tyree to put together a demo tape of his music to start a career as a recording artist .

From now on it was only a question of time before signing the first record deal with the Chicago-based underground label 'DJ International’ that was in 1986. The first 12inch “ I Fear The Night ” (with female vocalist Chic) promptly became an underground classic in Chicago. Other hits followed: “Acid Over” (1988) , “Turn Up The Bass” (1988/ 89) , “Let ’s Get Hyped” ( featuring Kool Rock Steady, 1989) , “Let the Music Take Cont rol” (1989) and “Hardcore Hip House” (1989) . That was the time when Tyree Cooper created a crossover version of house music together with his friend and fellow DJ Fast Eddie Smith and which was known as Hip House. It then caused a furore on the Hip Hop scene, while today Rap vocals are a common feature of the commercial House scene.

Tyree Cooper is now regarded as one of the most influential artists in the international House scene. Already looking back to a respectable discography
Cooper founded his own label in 2002: Supa Dupa Recordings. Later one of
the most important Hip House tunes was released on Epic with the original and some new remix versions: “Turn Up The Bass” , which is surely one of the most important Hip House tracks of all times.

Other remixing highlights and hits were undoubtedly Fast Eddie’s “Yo! Yo! Get Funky” , “ It ’s Alright ” by the Pet Shop Boys and the Mixmasters “ In the
Mix” , which was featured in Madonna's “Truth or Dare”.

True to the scene Tyree still lives in Chicago spreading his roots also in Europe’s exciting capitol Berlin – doing what he does best – spinning and traveling to Europe for gigs and producing new tracks on his own record label Supa Dupa Recordings and of course together with Shik Style for Realbasic Recordings.

Spacid (Retro acid, Ultra, Ghent)

Spacid started collecting music from a very early age and played occasionally on weddings and block parties. His first influences were Synthesizer Greatest (Jean-Michel Jarre, Vangelis ...) and new wave club classics (Front 242, Depeche Mode ...), later welcoming Belgium's New Beat craze and early Chicago house.

Spacid's first steps playing in front of a public dates back to 1991, while being a resident dj at Le Café in Kortrijk. There, once settled behind his trusty Technics, he played all the early electronic music this dance culture had to offer in those days. Together with some friends, Spacid organized his first party in 1992, which turned out to be a big success. 1994 saw the founding of Funky Green Aliens, a party organisation and booking agency concentrating on promoting groundbreaking music & arts and introducing international artists to the Belgian scene. These parties, mostly illegal, were very successful and still to this day represent the true roots of Spacid's dj career.

By 1997 he was propelled to slots at the biggest clubs and parties in Belgium and abroad, such as Dance Valley, Ten Days Off and Kozzmozz. His name started popping up in all major Belgian clubs and events and today he is resident at various important party concepts such as Body To Body at the famous Culture Club, Beats Of Love, Elektron, Retro Acid, Ultra ..

Apart from a busy dj schedule in Belgium he regularly plays abroad. Just have a look at line-ups of parties, festivals and clubs in France, the Netherlands, Germany, the UK, Poland and Malta. He manned the decks in British clubs and parties like Club Trash, Herbal, The Key, House of God, Downtownsounds, Human Zoo, Death disco and played in about every major Dutch club such as Paradiso, Club 013, Melkweg, Effenaar, Doornroosje. He was even invited at the Berlin Weekend club and Paris's 'Respect is Burning'.

A real ambassador of the vibrant club scene, both his quest for innovation and his reverence for the past transpire in his work as a dj. Spacid's sets are fuelled by an underlying thought process aimed at providing party people a good time and at the same time opening up music that is less evident to a larger public.

X&Trick live (Bugklinik, Ghent)

Belgian X&trick started dj-ing and organising parties in 1998. He was one of the first dj's to introduce many new music styles like breakcore, industrial, braindance, hardcore and drill n bass into the Belgian underground scene. During this period he traveled all around the country playing at most of Belgium's most legendary underground clubs and raves. It didn’t take long before he played his first shows abroad and his first international gigs became a fact. Around that time he was also getting more into own productions and his first tunes were made.

By 2003 his Dionysus parties had grown legendary, attracting more then a thousand ravers, so after 10 marvelous episodes it was time for something new...
X&trick moved to the city of Gent where he created 'Bug Klinik', still organising parties but this time with a new division called 'Bug Klinik Records'. This label created a place where he could bring together many of the artists and friends which he met during the past few years. A first ep by Yee-king was released, and in june 2004 X&trick's solo ep 'Forever' saw the daylight. This debut ep got well received by international press and scene, so he started to tour more often and further outside belgium. After several European tours with his mate Ceephax, they started to work more closely together which resulted in a release by Andy Jenkinson on Bug Klinik. They've been spotted frequently on many European stages delivering their sonic attacks to the masses.

Between 2005 and 2008 X&trick has been extensively touring with his live act, playing on most of Europe's respected nights and festivals, (f.e. being the first Belgian act on the London's legendary Neo-rave: Bang Face) and memorable tours in the United States and Japan...

These days X&trick is still the man behind 'Bug Klinik'. He is responsible for organising and programming countless successful events in- and outside Belgium which are uniting thousands of ravers and music lovers from all over the world ! Some of the most known are 'Clash of the Cultures', 'Overkill Belgium', 'Bug Klinik's NYE Extravganza', 'Invasion of the 50ft Soundsystem' (European Tour), Dionysus (on Tour)....Bug Klinik is currently expanding and new divisions are a web-label called 'Bug Web' and an artist / music consultancy agency called Bk Agency.

Meanwhile he's still producing music and by now he has full releases and / or contributions, remixes on well respected international labels like Suburban Trash Industries (D), Blind (B), Pandemonium (PL) and of course Bug Klinik. Recently he has launched his new projects Enkidu (Idm / Acid / Electronica) and Francis Fragile (Ambient, Improv, Clicks & Cuts). He already played several live acts under these names and the first releases are coming up soon.
